Racism occurs when one ethnic group or race discriminates, dominates, excludes or attempts to eliminate a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. It has been one of the most common issues in humanity. racism is the root of hate crime. Racism has been around since before the United States of America was established. Although historical events such as slavery, Columbus discovering the Americas, the tragic Holocaust led by Hitler and the 911 terrorist attacks have all been influential to racism and hate crime the most important and recent cause of the rise of hate crime in the United States has been the election of Donald Trump as president. During the Holocaust (1940) a ship of over 900 primarily German Jewish refugees was denied permission to land on U.S. soil, based on the Immigration Act of 1924. Only one-third of the refugees, who were forced to return to Europe, survived the genocide of Jews on the continent at the time. Even though Jews first arrived in America over 300 years ago and have had a certain level of religious freedom, anti-Semitism was justifiable and socially accepted, and in some cases it happened to be legal. For instance, some states in the late eighteenth century prohibited people who were not Christian from voting or running in public office. Later, these barriers were finally removed, with the help of the enactment of the Bill of Rights. The Ku Klux Kan (aka the KKK) is one of the most harmful and violent hate groups in America, did not just direct their rage at African-Americans but Jews were also a target to them. Discrimination and exclusion against Jews was also practiced in some cases in the workforce, and they were not permitted to enter into some of resort areas and social clubs. Colleges also practiced discrimination by limiting their enrolment.
